Number one:
Make sure no one is seriously injured
First step after any road accident should be to check that there are no serious injuries to those involved. Emergency medical assistance should be sought immediately if it is needed. After any injuries have been taken care of, get as much detail about the accident as possible.

Get the name of the third party
Make a note of the name of the driver of the other vehicle, as well as their telephone number, address and insurance details. They are legally required to give these details to you if the accident has caused damage to vehicles or people.
If there are any independent witnesses to the accident, take down their name and phone number too if possible.

Note down information about the other vehicle
Note down as much information about the crash as possible. Crucial details include the registration number, make/model and colour of all other vehicles involved. It may also be beneficial to note the number of people in each vehicle.

Get picture evidence
Many people these days own and carry a mobile phone which doubles as a digital camera. If you are in possession of one, you should take pictures of the crash scene and damage to vehicles present. These pictures can be used to help determine the correct version of events in case of a dispute.
